When trying Clash for the first time, use rule mode for everyday connections rather than enabling every advanced setting immediately. Explore TUN only when a desktop application ignores the system proxy. On Android and iOS, pay attention to VPN permissions, background execution, and battery-saving policies. Without a specific need for core-level debugging, Clash Plus is the more straightforward starting point.

If a subscription service already provides a complete configuration, most users only need to import it and choose proxy groups; there is no need to edit DNS, sniffing, or routing parameters one by one. Advanced users should keep overrides separate from the original subscription to prevent updates from overwriting local changes. Linux users should also verify that the system proxy is actually applied by their desktop environment.

FlClash supports Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android, making it a good fit for users whose main setup is a computer plus an Android phone. Android background restrictions, desktop firewall permissions, and the Linux desktop proxy environment each require separate attention. If one device works and another does not, compare system permissions and DNS behavior first rather than assuming the subscription has failed.

Before choosing it, decide whether you want a different interface or genuinely need a unique workflow. If you only import subscriptions and switch proxies, most actively maintained desktop clients can handle the job. If you regularly work with overrides, configuration merges, and log troubleshooting, compare the available settings in practice to see whether they match your habits.

Clash for Windows established a widely recognized desktop workflow, and many older guides still refer to interface sections such as Profiles, Proxies, General, and Logs. It is no longer maintained and is not suitable as a long-term choice for a new installation, but recognizing these legacy labels can help with historical configuration migration.
During migration, save the subscription URL, local overrides, and custom rules, then import them again in an actively maintained client. Do not assume every old setting has a one-to-one replacement; newer cores may handle DNS, rule types, and TUN differently. After migration, check the system proxy, rule matches, and access to frequently used sites separately.

Clash Meta for Android suits users who understand Android network permissions and want detailed control over connection behavior. It routes device traffic through VpnService, supports per-app proxy decisions, and can show rule matches and runtime logs. Greater control also means more system factors to understand.
Lock-screen disconnects on Android are not always caused by the proxy. Battery restrictions, background activity permissions, and vendor process management can all interrupt the client. After configuring it, test while the screen is locked and add the client to any necessary background-activity allowlists. For per-app proxying, determine whether to use include or exclude mode so that apps are not unintentionally left without connectivity.

Surfboard is an independent Android proxy client that can handle compatible rule configurations and mobile traffic routing. It should not be treated simply as another graphical shell for mihomo. Support for configuration fields, rule capabilities, and runtime behavior can differ between implementations, so confirm that the format matches before importing.
It is better suited to Android users who understand the difference between subscriptions and local configurations and are willing to resolve compatibility issues. If an imported field is not recognized, do not delete the entire configuration. First determine whether the field belongs to a proxy, proxy group, DNS section, or rules, then adjust it according to the client's supported features. If you specifically need mihomo extensions, compare the relevant Meta clients first.

ClashX Meta uses a macOS menu bar workflow for quickly switching proxy status and proxy groups, but the project is no longer maintained. Existing users can keep it for identifying legacy configuration structures; for a new installation, choose a maintained macOS client to get more reliable ongoing system compatibility and core support.
When migrating from a legacy setup, record the current subscription URL, system proxy mode, and custom rules before installing the new client. macOS may require network-extension or accessibility permissions again; a normal-looking menu bar icon does not prove that system traffic is being routed. Check logs and rule matches after migration to confirm the actual state.

Clash client interfaces change, but the selection logic is relatively stable. Always start by confirming the platform. iOS installation and system traffic routing differ from Android, while Linux desktop proxy settings differ from Windows. A client with rich features on one platform may not have an equivalent build on another.
Separate the client from the core
A graphical client handles installation, configuration management, system integration, and status display. The core handles protocol connections, DNS queries, rule evaluation, and traffic forwarding. Original Clash is now a legacy path, while modern clients generally continue expanding around the Meta or mihomo ecosystems. When a guide mentions a setting, determine whether it belongs to the client interface or the core configuration instead of copying it based only on button placement.
Maintenance status matters more than familiarity
A discontinued client may still launch and read old configurations, but operating-system permissions, network-extension APIs, and core features continue to change. For a fresh installation, an actively maintained project is the safer choice. Clash for Windows and ClashX Meta remain on this page to help existing users identify and migrate old setups, not as recommendations for new users.
More features do not automatically mean a better fit
If you only need browsers and everyday applications to follow the system proxy, a basic graphical client is enough. TUN, DNS overrides, traffic sniffing, rule providers, and configuration overrides should address specific needs rather than being enabled indiscriminately. The more settings you stack together, the more variables you must control during troubleshooting.
Changing clients does not mean changing subscriptions
A subscription URL is the configuration source; the client is the tool that reads and runs it. When changing clients, you can usually import the original subscription again, but local overrides, custom rules, and client-specific settings do not migrate automatically. Before migrating, save the subscription source and custom content, then restore them in stages: verify basic connectivity first, restore rules second, and handle TUN and DNS last.
